Fossanova Abbey
The Fossanova Abbey, declared a National Monument in 1874, is the oldest example of Cistercian-Gothic art in Italy. Built at the end of the 12ᵗʰ century on top of a 6ᵗʰ-century Benedictine monastery, the complex was handed over to Burgundian monks led by St Bernard of Clairvaux in 1134. Together with the Casamari Abbey, it represents one of the highest expressions of this artistic form.
Sermoneta
Sermoneta, amongst the best-preserved villages in Italy, has ancient origins, perhaps pre-Roman. Located in the province of Latina, 60 kilometres from Rome, it dominates the Pontine Plain from a hill set 257 metres above sea level. Its history began in the 13ᵗʰ century with the rule of the Caetani family, who constructed an imposing castle, transforming Sermoneta into a major cultural and artistic centre. Over the centuries, Castello Caetani and the city have welcomed important rulers and pontiffs.
